About Bone Loss
To understand bone loss, it helps to explain the anatomy of the mouth. Teeth have two portions: the crown, which is the portion that shows in your mouth, and the root, which is the portion that extends into your jaw bone. The jaw bone anchors the tooth securely, but when a tooth falls out, there’s no need for the bone to remain. Hence, the jaw bone begins to atrophy, or melt away, in a process called bone re-absorption. The longer the teeth are missing, the more bone will disappear.
How can you prevent bone loss? To date, dental implants are the only tooth-replacement solution that helps curb bone loss. This is because the implant post acts like a tooth root, stimulating natural bone growth. For more information on bone loss and your tooth-replacement options, click here.
At Houston Prosthodontic Associates, our primary concern is the loss of bone. We strive to prevent bone loss and the negative side-effects it causes, such as a “shrunken” facial appearance, loosened teeth, and additional tooth loss. Dr. Gittleman and our team will take Panoramic X-rays or CT scans to assess any bone loss and discuss your options in detail.
